Morristown Residents Speak Out Against
Mayor Cresitello’s Proposal to Deputize
Morristown Police as Immigration Agents
The American Friends Service Committee,
Wind of the Spirit,
and other immigration
advocacy organizations
called on Morristown
Mayor Donald Cresitello
to drop his plan
to have town police officers deputized
to enforce immigration laws
at a
press conference
on Monday, March 26, 2007
Monday, March 26, 2007 - Mayor Cresitello’s proposal goes directly against ourneed for a safe and friendly community and will instead lead to fear, distrust, and discriminatory practices. Immigrants in Morristown contribute to the community like everyone else. Police resources should be focused on crime prevention and investigation in order to maintain secure towns. Immigration status is not a relevant factor, and should not become one. Police should not be investigating everyone or anyone who might look like “immigrants.” Such proposal will put burdens on local police and will not help crime prevention.
Community groups led by Wind of the Spirit and the American Friends Service Committee will present 3,000 signatures endorsing a petition asking the Mayor to withdraw his proposal and further, to make Morristown a sanctuary for immigrants who live peacefully in our town.
